What Is Children Learning Reading?

A one-of-a-kind and systematic reading curriculum based on phonics and phonemic awareness instructions for toddlers as early as two or three years old.

Jim Yang, the program's developer, used it to teach his four children to read before they were three.

Phonemic awareness is very effective in helping young children utilize phonemes (individual sounds) to sound out words and decode written text in studies. Studies have also demonstrated that utilizing the phonics technique to teach reading results in more effective and fluent readers.

This curriculum consists of 50 mini-lessons divided into two stages: Stage 1 and Stage 2.

Jim suggests that parents begin their reading program when their child is 2.5 years old when he or she can speak more effectively. You can start your child sooner if your younger toddler's speech development is better advanced.

For the classes, you will not place your child in front of a television or a computer screen. Instead, you'll be spending quality time with your youngster going over the curriculum step by step.

Children Learning Reading is for who?

This class is for parents who have young children ages 2 to 8.

This is not a program in which parents simply put a DVD in the player or place their child in front of the computer.

You'll be actively involved as a parent in helping your toddler or preschooler learn to read phonetically using a simple, practical, and step-by-step approach. It is time well spent. Seriously. Please keep in mind that this is a digital bundle; no physical items will be sent to you. Upon purchasing, everything is downloaded to your PC.

Pros :

  • The software teaches and supports your child's phonics and phonemic awareness abilities in a comprehensive way.
  • The primary e-book has a great introduction that clearly explains the necessity and advantages of early reading, as well as the methods to assist your kid to learn to read.
  • It's simple to follow, and everything is explained in detail in the step-by-step tutorials.
  • This is also an opportunity for you to master phonics. I never learned phonics as a kid, so the teachings were beneficial to me as well.
  • Audio recordings that teach how to pronounce all of the letters sound correct. I was in desperate need of this because I had never been taught phonics.
  • The courses are brief to accommodate young children's short attention spans and parents' hectic schedules.
  • Super-effective, and seeing your child's reading growth after each class will be really satisfying. For me, it's been a very gratifying experience.
  • You may print, cut, and utilize printouts (Premium package) in your lessons with your child. My youngster adores the printouts and will play with them long after the session has ended.
  • This curriculum is less expensive than other award-winning and well-known newborn reading programs.
  • The entire curriculum is downloaded, so you can get started right away. There will be no actual items sent to you. Save money on shipping.

Cons :

  • You must devote everyday time to assisting your youngster in learning. The need for consistency and everyday parental engagement in helping your kid learn to read is critical.
  • I periodically came into a lesson in Stage 2 of the reading program where certain words didn't sound quite right when I sounded them out. As I already stated, I am untrained in phonics education. Perhaps they are sight words... I should have looked up "The Most Common Sight Words" at the bookstore.

Is the Baby Reading Program Effective? Not in our case.

I bought an expensive infant reading program (almost $170 after discounts) that promises to teach babies to read when my toddler son was 7 months old. After all, it was an award-winning software, and I was sold.

When he was approximately 9 months old, I began him on reading lessons. I finally decided to quit the classes after many weeks of seating my kid in front of the computer screen every day. I couldn't find any evidence that my infant was learning to read.

I'm not sure how helpful continual flashing of text and pictures can be in training a youngster to read. But putting my youngster on my lap and going over the daily lesson shown on the computer screen seemed such an easy way out. It didn't take much work on my side.

Initially, I assumed that my son wasn't ready for the program and that I would give it another shot when he was older. Instead, time passed, and my son grew into a toddler who was still unable to read.

Is it better to use the whole word method or the phonics method? The latter is the case.

I came upon another reading program, this time the Children Learning Reading program when he was around 17 months old.

I attentively studied their internet page and realized how critical it was to select the appropriate reading technique. For me, it's been an eye-opening experience. I mean, I didn't even know how important it was to select the appropriate reading technique at the time.

Perhaps it wasn't such a terrible thing that my kid didn't learn to read with the infant reading program since, now that I think about it, it was teaching children to read using the full word technique, which would require my child to "memorize" hundreds or thousands of word forms! I would say that this is not a very sound or successful reading approach.

I'd prefer if he learned to read by sounding out words and decoding them using phonics and phonemic awareness guidelines. Which, as I've subsequently discovered, would result in more effective readers in terms of reading and spelling ability. The Children Learning Reading curriculum employs this type of education.

Knowing this increased my faith in the program.

My young son, on the other hand, was hardly able to communicate...

When I wrote Jim to inquire whether it was okay to start my kid on his reading program, he answered honestly that while my son was too young to begin, it was never too early to assist him to develop his phonemic awareness.

Jim was heartened by the fact that his own kid began picking up phonemic awareness when he was around 1.5 years old, and by the time he was 2.5 years old, he had established great phonemic awareness skills, and his reading lesson development was fantastic.

I purchased the premium package, followed Jim's instructions, and began working with my kid to help him improve his phonemic awareness via play. Informal learning was limited to a bare minimum and focused on fun. In the meantime, my son continued to develop, play, and investigate his surroundings.

Kaden was saying some words, understood his alphabet, and could pronounce most of his letter sounds by the time he was two years and two months old. I also saw that he was a quick learner. I needed to come up with a way to stimulate and occupy him. I remembered Jim's reading curriculum and began Kaden's lessons.

Does This Program Work?

Seeing how enthusiastically my young son took in his lessons was a great experience! He was enthralled by the Stage 1 lessons and printouts, and he would play with them until the thick paper cutouts were worn and crumpled. Each instruction was brief, lasting little more than 7 minutes on average.

His reading development was excellent since he already knew his letter names and sounds when he began the program.

His mommy, meaning myself, was the one who occasionally postponed his lessons, allowing other hobbies and life to take precedence on certain days. Stage 1 may have been finished in as little as 12 weeks or as long as three months. Ours took 4.5 months to finish...

But it didn't stop Kaden from picking up a book and learning to read! It's interesting to see small children progress from sounding out single words to sounding out short phrases like:

“THE CAT HOPS UP, UP, UP”,

“The red bus is bent, and it has a dent.”

He was even reading mini-stories after Stage 1! He has also transitioned from uppercase to the lowercase letter reading.

I'm extremely proud of myself for being his first teacher and for assisting him in learning to read!

Can Toddlers Learn to Read Quickly and Fluently? Sure.

Perhaps phonics education did not educate or train me. When I sounded out particular words to my toddler, I found it weird at times. My son could generally name the word I was sounding out to him, even though I felt like a robot sounding out things that were incomprehensible to me. Awesome.

When we got to Stage 2 of the reading program, I saw his amazing improvement when I played a small game with him. I'd say something weird like, "Button, the word button begins with the letter...", and my toddler would respond with the letter B and its letter sound! That was the start of a little speller for me. I was elated and pleasantly surprised!

Another factor that persuaded me was that the Children Learning Reading program was a fantastic reading curriculum.

He handed me book 1A and requested that I read it. Instead, I invited him to read, hoping to make use of the opportunity to assist him in honing his newfound reading ability. I was astounded when he was able to read Book 1A fully on his own!

I never imagined that my child would be reading a short book to me in a few months. He did, though. And it did when I opened book 2A to see if the magic continued.

I recorded a 15-second video clip of him reading book 2A, which you can see here.

Is This a Program I Would Recommend? Highly!

I have to say that working with Kaden on the Children Learning Reading program was one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life. Being able to assist my own son in learning to read and witnessing his transformation and progress in such a short period made me feel like I was doing something right.

It is both an eye-opener and a powerful experience for a parent to see a young child's learning potential.

My youngster has completed half of his Stage 2 courses.

“Mommy, do lesson 11!” he'd yell as he ran after me for his lessons. He'd say, "Do lesson 12!" if I agreed. “You need to practice Lesson 11 more,” I'd advise. And after you've mastered lesson 11, we'll go on to lesson 12.”

He likes looking over his lessons, which I have printed and filed in a folder so he knows what's coming up next. It's crucial to know that he likes his classes and is having a good time learning.

Stop if you've come across material on training a child to read for the first time, or if you've been debating whether to buy those pricey infant reading programs. I strongly advise you to look at Jim Yang's downloadable Children Learning Reading software. His program is fantastic, and the results are undeniable!

Here's a video of Kaden reading at the age of three. He was reading two of Joy Cowley's extremely short stories from her book The Apple. The video is only about two minutes long.

Latest Updates

Kaden is now five years old. We finished his classes shortly after he turned three years old. I know we weren't the most speedy bunnies when it came to finishing the classes. ;)

Kaden's kindergarten teacher told him two weeks ago that he can read and is a good performer in her class. Normally, if she wanted the youngsters in the class to write something, she would either have to teach them how to spell the words or let them duplicate the short phrases. Kaden's instructor would just let him do his own writing because she has seen that he can phonetically spell out certain words on his own. She'd only correct him after he'd finished.

I haven't read with him every day like I used to when he was little. Even yet, when I check on his reading abilities regularly, I'm continually astonished at how far he's come. He can recognize and recall virtually all of our current MRT train station names, and he can look at a global map and identify a large number of nations, thanks to his ability to read.

Here's a video showing him reading at the age of 5 years and 7 months. The book is titled The Super Reader, level 10, and is part of Ladybird's Superhero Phonic Readers series. The video runs for more than eight minutes.
